Harriet Beecher Stowe autograph letter signed regarding her masterpiece, ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'', credited with driving anti-slavery sentiment in the North, eventually leading to the Civil War. Datelined Harford, Connecticut, 14 September 1883, Stowe writes to an unnamed man, who inquired as to whether the characters in the novel were based on actual individuals. Stowe writes, ''...the characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin...Eva is wholly ideal - the other characters, tho suggested by real persons, none of them embody a real history of anyone in particular...HB Stowe''. Single page letter measures 5.25'' x 8.25''. Folds archivally repaired upon verso. Letter is still bright, in very good condition.
