Harper Lee typed letter signed, dated 4 January 1993. Lee's new year greeting to ''Dearest Felix Parduses'' reads: This is the first opportunity I've had to communicate with you; I hope you were so busy over Christmas that you're dog-tired and ever richer...There has evolved a new holiday sport in Monroeville, that of people bringing their visiting relatives to look at me. There is so little in the way of entertainment, looking at Harper Lee is something to do. Thanksgiving weekend was such hell that it got on Alice's nerves as well--they came in VANS. So the family spent a quiet and wonderful Christmas in condos at the beach; Alice and I bailed out to Eufaula for New Year's at our sister's. So Monday began with the telephone and kept up all day: people whose aggregate age is about 500 asking if I'd please come by and sign books for their great-great grandchildren who ''missed you over Christmas''-- you can't say no to that. In a way it was nice, a day of Old Monroeville reminiscence at shouting volume, tea-cakes and coffee. New Monroeville's collective memory goes back as far as the Building of Wal-Mart. You know I loved the glimpse of you--depend upon it...I do apologize for M.'s leaving me at the shop--in the middle of a business day when you had neither the time nor inclination for a cozy visit. She's more southern than we are. This letter is singularly lacking in even good humor. It's really only to say I love you and wish you health and happiness in 1993. At our age, that's what we need most. I miss you [signed] Nelle''. The 8.5'' x 11'' page is in fine condition accompanied by original envelope, written in Lee's hand.
