Harper Lee typed letter signed, dated 29 December 1991, from her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. In her letter, Lee thanks her penpal ''Mr. Salter'' for his recent gift, a book entitled ''The Image of Progress: Alabama Photographs, 1877-1917.'' Letter reads in part: ''...I have not misplaced the 'The Image of Progress.' My sister and I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy it. It takes us farther back than it takes you, because we are older. It is truly a marvelous collection of photographs...I can remember when the lower end of Monroe Country was fragrant with pine resin from the turpentine stills, I can remember the old hotel at Point Clear, and want to say I recall old Gayfer's in the Mobile but am told that I couldn't!...Thank you for your kindness in remembering me. You've sent me a book that I shall treasure always. Happy New Year!'' Signed in black ink, ''Harper Lee''. One page letter, measuring 5.75'' x 7.75'', has one fold from mailing. Also includes original postmarked envelope with a Monroeville return address. Near fine.
