George Washington letter signed, dated 24 September 1777 in the thick of the Philadelphia Campaign during the Revolutionary War, and two days before the British captured the historic city. Washington here writes to Brigadier General Alexander McDougall, who was marching west from New York and just entered Pennsylvania by way of Coryell's Ferry. Washington is pleased to have reinforcements arriving, writing in full,

''Camp near Potts Grove 24th Sept. 1777 / Dear Sir / I am pleased to find by yours from Coryell's Ferry that you are so near me. The Army will fall down to night to a well known place called the Trap [tavern hospitable to the Colonists] 24 miles from Philad'a. Tomorrow we shall proceed further down towards Philad'a. / I am Dear Sir / yr. most ob't. Ser't. / Go: Washington / Gen'l Mcdougal''.

Although McDougall would not arrive in time to protect Philadelphia, he helped Washington at the Battle of Germantown on 4 October, leading a brigade on the left wing. Single page letter on bifolium stationery has body written in the hand of Washington's aide, Tench Tilghman, measuring 6'' x 7.675'' as folded. With intact red wax seal on integral address leaf, inscribed ''To Brig'r Gen'l Mcdougall on his march from Coryells Ferry''. Folds, otherwise near fine condition. Accompanied by a 8'' x 10.75'' engraving of Washington.
