George Washington document signed as President, granting land to Brigadier General Peter Muhlenberg for his military service. Signed ''Go: Washington'' at lower right, countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering on 10 February 1797. Also with signature of James McHenry, Secretary of War, on verso. A Lutheran minister and U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, Muhlenberg also served as General in the Revolutionary War after he earned the nickname ''Devil Pete'' when serving in the German dragoons. Vellum document measures 12.625'' x 14.875'' with intact paper seal at lower left. Folds, and dampstaining at upper and lower areas, overall in very good condition.
