Pierre Lacau typed letter signed, ''P. Lacau'' as Director of Antiquities in Egypt, pertaining to the Luxor Temple and the Mosque of Abu al-Haggag, where Sheikh Yusuf Abu al-Haggag is entombed. Dated 12 January 1918 French letter translates in part,
''Mr. Under-Secretary of State, In reply to your letter...of December 25, 1917, I have the honor to forward to you herewith a detailed report, dated January 4...from our agent Hakim Eff Abouseif, concerning the demolition of the wall separating the Temple of Luxor from the Mosque of Abu al-Haggag.
We approve the conclusions of this report and are therefore prepared to participate in the reconstruction of half the wall, as before, that is to say, we will provide the necessary materials and labor. Our Director of Works, Mr. E. Baraize, will be able to supervise the work, which would begin at the end of this month. / Please accept, Mr. Under-Secretary of State, the assurance of my deepest respect. The Director General, [signed] P. Lacau''.
