Stunning naval appointment signed by President Franklin Pierce, appointing Andrew H. Johnson to Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, dated 5 November 1855. With naval vignettes at bottom, including a depiction of sea monsters and Poseidon with his horses. Orange seal affixed to vellum document, which measures approximately 14'' x 17'', double-matted to a size of 17'' x 21''. Small hole on upper fold line, overall near fine condition with very bright vellum.
