Franklin D. Roosevelt letter signed as President, regarding the quality of milk in New York City. Composed upon White House letterhead from Hyde Park on 5 February 1940, FDR writes in depth to a resident of the city regarding the quality of its milk supply, apparently a contentious topic at the time. In part, ''...many cities have had experience parallel to that of New York in the improvement of their milk supplies during the last 30 years and have discontinued the extra quality grade after the quality in the entire milk supply had reached a satisfactory level...a premium grade often persists in the competition of milk dealers for business to satisfy the demand of a certain group of consumers for extra quality...I stand by what I have said previously...but I certainly do not want that position to be used in a way that might be considered as discouraging to the public health authorities in New York City...From press reports I gather that this matter will be the subject of broad discussion during the next several months. I would not like for any correspondence to be published and used in that discussion...[signed] Franklin D. Roosevelt''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 8'' x 10.5''. Folds and staple puncture at upper left, otherwise near fine with a very bold signature by Roosevelt. An interesting, lengthy letter showing FDR's attention to local issues, as he was also dealing with the nation's economy and war in Europe.
