Beautifully rendered fore-edge paintings on ''Our Mutual Friend'', featuring a split double painting (two different paintings displayed, depending upon the orientation of the book) of Charles Dickens, and also scenes from the novel. London: Chapman and Hall, n.d. but circa 1880s, in two volumes bound together. Concealed by gilt, fore-edge paintings are revealed when pages are fanned, a technique invented by the bookbinder for King Charles II, who reportedly grew tired of his books not being returned to his library, and sought a way to secretly identify them in his friends' collections. Bound in forest green morocco with gilt embellishments and marbled endpapers. Measures 6.375'' x 8.5''. Light wear with rubbing to spine, overall in very good plus condition.
