First edition, first printing of William Thackeray's beloved English novel, ''Vanity Fair''. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. With all three first edition points present: rustic title on page 1; the ''Marquis of Steyne'' woodcut on p. 336 (later suppressed) and ''Mr Pitt'' instead of ''Sir Pitt'' on p. 453. With 40 plates including frontispiece and illustrated title page. Book measures 5.25'' x 8.5'' and runs 624pp. Bound in contemporary green morocco with gilt and ribbed spine embellishments. Marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. Some sunning to spine and light foxing to endpapers, else near fine.
