Rare autograph letter signed by Charles Darwin's wife, Emma Darwin. Although the Darwin marriage was a happy one, Emma Darwin was exceedingly religious and Darwin confessed, upon publishing his theory of evolution that ''it is like confessing a murder'', so concerned was he about the impact his ideas would have on his family and community. Dated 16 December 1851, Emma Darwin here writes to the Darwins' legal and financial advisor, Thomas Salt, in part, ''I enclose you the receipt for...Interest up to Dec 15...Emma Darwin''. Single page on card-style bifolium stationery measures 4.25'' x 7'' as folded. Small hole on last page, else near fine condition.
