Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed as President, dated 25 January 1954 on official White House stationery. Here, Eisenhower writes to his brother, Edgar, discussing the controversial Bricker Amendment: ''Dear Ed: As I promised you, I will call you up and give you details as quickly as I know what our Washington Birthday plans (if any) will be. Just another thought or two on this Bricker Amendment thing. The Republican Platform merely states that we pledge ourselves to see that no treaty or Executive agreement can have any force or effect if in violation of the Constitution. That was written into the Platform at the suggestion of Senator Bricker. Moreover, the original Bricker Amendment, I understand, was confined to this simple wording and intent. The 'which' clause came into the thing insidiously and without awakening the fears of many -- including capable, even brilliant -- lawyers. It was not until people began to explores into the actual ultimate workings of that particular part of the amendment that lawyers, including some of those who had originally endorsed the Bricker Amendment, became alerted to the danger...P.S.: You will be interested in the attached editorials from the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot.'' Signed ''DE'' in black ink, letter measures 7'' x 10.5'' with two holes punched at top. Minor toning, else near fine.
