Stunning set of 12 hand-colored lithographs plus lithographic map, contained within the original printing of ''War Between the United States and Mexico''. New York and Philadelphia: Appleton, 1851. Bound in the original publisher's cloth measuring 18'' x 24'', this seminal book covers the twelve major battles of the Mexican-American War, each with an accompanying brilliantly colored lithograph. All lithographs are present, plus the rare frontispiece map titled ''Map of the Operations of the American Army in the Valley of Mexico in August and September 1847''.
Printed in Paris by Bayot, lithographs were illustrated by Carl Nebel, who was commissioned by George Wilkins Kendall to depict the battles. Kendall was both a soldier and war correspondent, serving in Capt. Benjamin McCulloch's Texas Ranger company. He fought in several of the battles described herein, ultimately wounded during the Battle of Chapultepec. Included in both the Sabin and Howes bibliographies as one of the most important works of Americana.
Large folio is bound in original three-quarter brown morocco and green cloth, spanning 52pp. Wear to binding, especially along spine, and foxing within, mostly confined to margins of color lithographs. Some dampstaining on last pages. Overall in good condition with lithographs in very good plus condition.
