Complete set of "Harper's Weekly" newspapers from 1865, bound together into a book measuring 12" x 16.5", with each of the weekly papers running approximately 16 pages. "Harper's Weekly" was one of the primary news sources for Americans during the Civil War, with coverage here of notable battles, culminating in the surrender of the Confederacy at Appomattox Court House. The assassination, viewing and burial of President Lincoln is also reported upon, as is the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth and President Andrew Johnson's early clashes with the Radical Republicans in Congress. Also with numerous illustrations by Thomas Nast - called "The Father of the American Cartoon", including a well-known dual "Pardon. And Not This Man?" illustration from the 5 August issue, contrasting lenient treatment of Confederate soldiers with the denial of voting rights for African-American veterans. Boards partially detached from text block and some chipping to interior pages. Light toning and foxing. Very good condition.
