Clara Barton autograph letter signed to her closest political ally, General Benjamin Butler. Written from Washington, DC on 29 May (no year), Barton inquires about the status of a family member: ''Genl Butler / Dear Sir / Will you be so kind as to inform me how Vassall's affairs stand with the P.O. Dept. at present, so far as you know, and if there is anything more that should be done to aid or strengthen him. / I called at your house last evening to make this inquiry in person, but have not the physical strength to repeat the call today - Yrs truly / Clara Barton''. Clara's sister, Sally Barton, married Vester Vassall, so this letter is likely in reference to either him, or one of their two children. Single page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Mounted to cardstock, otherwise very good condition.
