Clara Barton autograph letter signed, datelined Washington, D.C., 26 October 1868. Barton writes to her advocate and confidante, General Benjamin Butler, who responds to her letter with a signed note. Barton's letter reads in full ''General Butler / My dear friend / I have still another matter in which I need your advice, but I will not crowd it into these troubled days. How soon after your election shall you be in Washington? And if not very soon, may I see you at your present home, and when? / Always gratefully / Yours / Clara Barton''. Butler writes in part upon the verso, ''Ans / My dear Miss Barton / I shall not be in Washington until...the first Saturday in December...happy to see you at any time...Respectfully BB''. Single page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Dampstaining to bottom portion and tape residue along sides, overall very good condition.
