Excellent autograph letter signed by Clara Barton, Civil War nurse and humanitarian whose vocal anti-slavery views were sometimes deemed too controversial during her lifetime. Marked ''Confidential'', Barton is likely writing to her close confidante General Benjamin Butler. Undated but circa 1865, Barton writes in full, ''Some few months ago Dr. Sidney was suddenly relieved from the position of Post Surgeon of Norfolk by Dr. J.J. Craven a former protege of Genl Gilmore's in the 10th corps. / Not having seen Dr. Sidney since the occurrence until today, I have never inquired the cause of him, but was informed through other sources at the time, that it took place the next day after Sidney had made an off hand speech, (an art in which he excels) and in which he hoped he should live to see every negro in the south a voter, and General Butler President of the United States. / With these sentiments I think he will do to go south. / Yrs C.B.'' Single page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Folds and discoloration along bottom edge, otherwise near fine condition.
