First edition, first impression of Charles Dickens' classic work, ''Oliver Twist''. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. Published in three volumes, with ''Boz'' listed as the author on the title page of each as required for the first impression, and with ''pilaster'' appearing twice on page 164 of the third volume. With all 24 plates by George Cruikshank, although the last plate in volume III is the ''Church'' plate that Dickens ordered to replace the original ''Fireside'' plate. This series is therefore one of the later runs of the first impression. Bound in beautiful contemporary black morocco with gilt titling and ribbed spine. Top edges gilt. Light toning and foxing to plates, else near fine condition.
