Signed by Sandburg along the top edge in black fountain pen, ''Vaughn Shoemaker - my ancient friend - Carl Sandburg 1951''. Called the voice of America, Sandburg won three Pulitzer Prizes, two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln.
