Academy Award nomination plaque for ''The Deer Hunter'' as Best Picture of 1978. Initial reaction to the film, about a group of childhood buddies who became soldiers together in Vietnam, was quite controversial, but reflected the public's disgust with the war; today ''The Deer Hunter'' on the lauded AFI Top 100 list. Michael Cimino directed his stars Robert DeNiro, John Cazale, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep and others to acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations and wins. The film won a total of 5 Oscars at the 51st Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Interestingly, the presentation of the Best Picture award by John Wayne was the last public appearance of his life.
