Story Musgrave signed 20'' x 16'' photo from STS-61, the successful mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. Musgrave is shown being hoisted to the top of Hubble during one of the three spacewalks he performed during the mission, thereby restoring sight to other galaxies as far as 13.4 billion light-years away and giving humans back on Earth a visual window into space. The only astronaut to have flown on all five space shuttles, Musgrave is also the most educated astronaut, having earned six academic degrees in fields as diverse as literature and biophysics. A true Renaissance man, Musgrave here reflects on the importance of STS-61. Musgrave's handwritten portion reads in full:
''Hubble touches people. When you are looking that far out, you're giving people their place in the universe. Science is often visual, so it doesn't need translation. It is like poetry, it touches you. I think if we had not repaired the telescope, it would have been the end of the space station, because the space station requires a huge number of space-walks. I've never really let go and celebrated what I did with the Hubble telescope. As Neil Armstrong said, 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.' / Story Musgrave''. Photo measures 20'' x 16'', in near fine condition. With additional LOA from Musgrave.
