Segment of heat shield taken from the Apollo 8 Command Module, after the successful completion of the mission in December 1968. Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to leave Earth's low orbit and actually orbit the moon. Heat shield, which is charred on left side from reentry, measures approximately 1.625'' x .5'' x .375'', encased in a rectangular acrylic display measuring 2.625'' x 1.5'' x 1.375'', with black bottom. Label within acrylic has information about the Apollo 8 mission and also reads, ''A piece of aft ablative material from spacecraft No. 103''. Some yellowing to acrylic, and light scratching, overall in very good condition.
