Alexander Calder autograph note signed, declining an invitation to attend a lunch at the Yale-Norfolk Art School in 1952. He writes in full, ''Dear Mr. Dowden / I will be unable to attend your lunch, as I am off to Europe that day. Cordially / A. Calder''. Written on the verso of a postcard, with front postmarked 4 September 1952 and address portion handwritten by Calder. Earlier in 1952 Calder was awarded the grand prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.25''. Near fine condition.
