Albert Einstein autograph letter signed, written 7 December 1923, one year after being awarded the Nobel Prize, and during Germany's economic crisis of rampant inflation. Einstein writes to a Dr. Martin in The Hague, Netherlands about the precarious situation of Germany's ''intellectual workers'', commenting that even despite the poor conditions in Germany, ''A man of good will and an open mind will be able to do something useful in any location.'' Composed upon a postcard, letter in German translates in full, ''Dear Colleague! Thank you very much for the great kindness you rendered me and by virtue of which I am now able to be helpful to these people. After all, it is necessary now for the intellectual workers in Germany to look for a subsistence at some place where the economical situation is better and where there is not yet an overabundance of such talent. / A man of good will and an open mind will be able to do something useful in any location. / Most likely, he himself does not yet know exactly what suitable activity will be available for him there. My concern in this was to provide him with a recommendation, and you kindly enabled me to do this. / With collegial greetings, / Yours faithfully, / A. Einstein''. Postmarked from Leiden, Holland on 7 December 1923. At this time, Einstein was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and perhaps visiting Holland in that capacity. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.5''. Light creasing, else near fine condition.
