Stephen Hawking Autograph Sold

Here are some Stephen Hawking items we have sold in the past:

Stephen Hawking Signed Book From 1973 — One of the Scarcest of Signatures

Stephen Hawking book signed from 1973, shortly before Hawking was not able to write his name due to ALS. Hawking signed this book, ”The Archaeology of the Industrial Revolution”, along with several other members of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge University, on the occasion of an employee leaving his job as a computer operator. Hawking signs the half-title page, ”Stephen Hawking”, in stilted, but legible writing, below the signatures of other faculty members and below the gift inscription, ”With gratitude and best wishes from the friends of the IOA computer staff.”

It was at the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge where Hawking, as a research scientist, made some of his earliest scientific breakthroughs regarding black holes and quantum mechanics. Also in 1973, he published his important first book, ”The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time” which is now considered a classic and has been printed many times over. It was also at this time that ALS was overtaking Hawkings physically, and he would be confined to a wheelchair by 1975.

First edition book, published in 1973, measures 9” x 11.25” with dust jacket. Light pulling away from binding at bottom of signature page, but overall in near fine condition. Accompanied by email chain of provenance originating from the recipient of the book. A fantastic item, captured during the brief time that Hawking’s physical condition was deteriorating but his intellectual achievements were rapidly accelerating. Sold for $25,000.

Stephen Hawking Signed Book From 1973 — One of the Scarcest of Signatures

Stephen Hawking Signed Copy of His Personally Owned Book, ”Astrophysical Quantities” — One of the Most Important Books on Astrophysics — With University Archives COA

Stephen Hawking ownership signature within ”Astrophysical Quantities”, one of the most referenced books in the discipline of astrophysics. London: The Athlone Press, 1964 second edition by Clabon Allen. Signed by Hawking on the front free endpaper in black ballpoint, ”S.W. Hawking”, with the bookseller’s date in pencil reading ”4-6-70”, revealing when Hawking most likely purchased and signed the book. At this time in 1970, Hawking was doing his most vigorous work on black holes, and theorized what is now accepted as the second law of black hole dynamics. This book, ”Astrophysical Quantities” was probably used repeatedly by the legendary scientist at the time. Book measures 6.875” x 9.75”, bound in publisher’s forest green boards and housed in original dust jacket. Jacket has some sunning to spine and a few nicks, in very good condition. Book itself is near fine. With University Archives COA. Sold for $25,000.

Stephen Hawking book signed from 1976, shortly before Hawking was not able to write his name due to ALS. Hawking signs this novel, ”October the First is Too Late”, on the blank page opposite the title page in his stilted, but legible handwriting, reading ”Stephen Hawking” in blue ballpoint; interestingly, some doodles appearing on the back page also have the same stilted quality, indicating they may have been done by Hawking as well. Signature was acquired by Professor Antal Bejczy, a NASA scientist who developed the Mars Rover Sojourner and who worked with Hawking at CalTech in the 1970s. Novel is a 1976 paperback printing by author Fred Hoyle who, beyond his writing pursuits, was principally a theoretical astronomer. Like Hawking, he worked at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and also at CalTech where, during a sabbatical, he developed a theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. Book measures 4.5” x 7.125”. Toning to interior pages, and some creasing to covers. Very good condition. Sold for $7,500.

Speaking of scientists, we at Nate D. Sanders Auctions (http://www.NateDSanders.com), also sold (similar to a Stephen Hawking autograph):

Albert Einstein Autograph Letter Signed, Shortly After WWII

Albert Einstein autograph letter signed, with extraordinary content regarding the German’s continued ”attachment to Nazi-dom”, the destructive nature of humanity, and American culture post WWII, including its ”imperialism and military psychology” as well its ”intellectual theft”. Dated 22 January 1947, Einstein writes in German on his blind-embossed Princeton stationery, translated in full: ”Dear Friend, I thank you today for your kind wishes and send you mine, somewhat shamefully late, but still, you can say, at the start of the year. At one point I had a correspondence with [philosopher and scientist Josef] Popper-Lynkeus that in a way I feel ashamed of. In it, I criticized his concept of a ‘duty to provide subsistence’ as being impractical, and I am afraid that criticism was not good. I did agree with him that protecting the individual from material want was an undeniable and important duty of society, but believed that interference of such magnitude into the freedom of the individual was not desirable and not warranted for the attainment of the goal. In doing so, I totally failed to recognize the high instructive value of such a development, which would, after all, be the exact opposite of society’s requiring military duty, even concerning the instructive impact. You propose classes in social-ethics instruction. No doubt, that would be good, but talk remains talk and tends to ossify. Action has greater impact.

I can well imagine how excited you are that your research results in pernicious anemia and somatic treatment of psychological illnesses have been accepted. You did not mention the people here. Small surprise there since intellectual theft is one of the hallowed traditions of this blessed country, which is well-known to the initiated. It adorns the thief while also helping overcome the inferiority complex that still operates under the surface.

The Germans have not succeeded in concealing their attachment to Nazi-dom. I hope that will cause others to destroy the German danger more radically than after the last war – so that jealousy of the victors will not result again in rivalry for the German confederation. Mankind in the mass is a fatal beast about which you can never tell when and where it will destructively pounce. Victory has not been good for those here, as imperialism and military psychology have taken hold. And yet one cannot be grateful enough for that victory.

Enjoy your days compiling your works. To you and your dear wife I wish happy and harmonious days. Warmly, A. Einstein”. An additional postscript written vertically in the left margin reads, ”Have you heard that our dear [Gustav Peter] Bucky narrowly escaped death thanks to surgery performed at the last minute? Apparently it was a case of medically adventurous proportions (obstruction of stomach and intestines caused by an interior hernia). [Rudolph] Nissen’s surgery must have been the accomplishment of a genius.” Single page measures 8.5” x 11”. Folds, otherwise near fine condition. With original transmittal envelope postmarked Princeton on 22 January 1947. Sold for $24,063.
