Sputnik 1 Model

A Sputnik 1 model just sold for almost $850,000 and we can get up to this price for you at The Nate D. Sanders Auction House.  Please email [email protected] to get a free appraisal.

In the past, a Sputnik 1 model has sold for just over $250,000.  Thus, the Sputnik 1 model has more than tripled in value recently.

We at Nate D. Sanders Auction House (http://www.NateDSanders.com) have had great luck with our science & space auctions.  We have even sold 6 scientific Nobel Prizes, a world record for an auction house.  One Nobel Prize award sold for almost $800,000.  Ironically, it is around the same price of a Sputnik 1 model now.  Here is the write-up from CNBC:

Yet another Nobel Prize has gone under the gavel.

Dr. Alan Hodgkin’s 1963 Nobel Prize sold for $795,614 by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on Thursday. The award, which Hodgkin received for his work on the central nervous system, is one of only 13 to go to auction.

Hodgkin and colleague A.F. Huxley used nerve cells from a giant squid to study electrical impulses at a cellular level and ultimately, greatly impacted modern neurology.

The Nobel Prize is made of 23 karat gold and sold with a letter of authenticity from Hodgkin’s daughter.

Several other Nobel Prizes have been auctioned in the last year. Physicist Leon Lenderman’s award sold for $765,000 in May (also by Nate D. Sanders Auction House).

Nate D. Sanders Auctions also just sold this Albert Einstein autograph on a photo for $125,000:

Very rare Albert Einstein autograph on his photo, on the occasion of the Nobel Prize winner playfully sticking out his tongue to a group of photographers on his 72nd birthday. Photo was snapped on 14 March 1951 by Arthur Sasse, a UPI photographer whose employers were at first hesitant about publishing the iconoclastic image of Einstein; when they did, Einstein was so amused by it that he ordered several prints to give out to close friends. This image is unlike most which crop the photo to show only Einstein. Here, the photo is shown in its full context with Einstein seated between Dr. Frank Aydelotte, head of the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, and Aydelotte’s wife, after celebrating his birthday at the Princeton Club. Photo is signed along the left margin ”A. Einstein .51”, indicating he signed the image shortly after it was taken. Albert Einstein autograph photo measures 7” x 10”. Very good to near fine condition. Extraordinarily rare Albert Einstein autograph on his photo, the most famous and beloved image of him.  Sold for $125,000.

In April 2013, we sold the actual Apollo 15 hand grip of the controller used by Al Worden, with a signed COA from Worden for $72,556.

The grip was used at various points in the mission and helped to adjust the attitude of the spacecraft during flight at many incredible tense, critical moments in the journey.

As Al Worden puts it in the signed COA included with the grip, which is mounted on wood:

“…this control stick cover, NASA serial number MSC 991-0001.12, was the hand controller I used during the flight of Apollo 15. The function of the hand controller was to adjust the attitude of the spacecraft during flight. For instance it was critical to the maneuver designed to withdraw the Lunar Module from the S-IVB stage of the launch vehicle once leaving earth orbit. This maneuver involved 180 degree rotation of the Command and Service Module to align with the Lunar Module in storage. It was also essential for the alignment of the spacecraft in the proper direction for any thrusting maneuver. This controller was essential to the success of Apollo 15 and has been in my possession since the flight.”

In January 2014, we sold this Apollo 11 flown flag for over $63,000:

Exceptionally Scarce Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon — Signed by Armstrong, Aldrin & Collins

United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. Flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969.” Certificate is signed ”Neil Armstrong”, ”Michael Collins” and ”Buzz Aldrin” in felt tip and has the Apollo 11 crew emblem near the center. Printed along the bottom edge are the first words by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: ”One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The silk United States flag measures 6” x 4”, mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10” x 12”. Some show through of adhesive to flag corners and light toning to certificate, else near fine.  Our most expensive Apollo 11 flag flown to the moon that we auctioned.  Sold for $63,195.
