When Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton as millionaire playboy/ crime-fighter “Bruce Wayne” in the epic 1989 film “Batman”, fans responded in uproara at his choice, as Keaton had until then, mostly played leading comedic roles.

Warner Bros. was deluged with thousands upon thousands of letters of complaint commenting that he was the wrong choice for the Caped Crusader opposite Jack Nicholson playing the lunatic villain, “The Joker”.

In this original trailer, all fears of Keaton’s acting abilities subsided in fans as he stepped up to the plate and far superseded expectations. Not to mention blockbuster earnings with $400 million in box office totals.

The suit itself was an incredible feat to create — costume designer Bob Ringwood found it difficult to make because “the image of Batman in the comics is this huge, big six-foot-four hunk with a dimpled chin. Michael Keaton is a guy with average build”, he said. “The problem was to make somebody who was average-sized and ordinary-looking into this bigger-than-life creature.”

Burton commented, “Michael is a bit claustrophobic, which made it worse for him. The costume put him in a dark, Batman-like mood though, so he was able to use it to his advantage”.

Said Keaton himself of the role and of filming in London, “It was a lonely time for me, which was great for the character, I suppose. I would run at night in London just trying to get tired enough so I could sleep. I didn’t talk to people much. My little boy was a toddler, and the woman I was married to at the time, we were not together but we were trying to figure it out and get back together. It was me in London, alone, and my sleep during that whole movie was never right…There had never been a movie like it before. There was a lot of risk, too, with Jack (Nicholson) looking the way he did and me stepping out in this new way. The pressure was on everybody. You could feel it.”
