Alan Turing Autograph

An Alan Turing autograph is a great rarity because of his untimely death and limited amount of autographs known to exist.  We would estimate that there are at least 100 Albert Einstein autographs that come to auction for every Alan Turing autograph.  And to us, Alan Turing seems to be just as brilliant as Einstein; a name buried in history unlike Einstein who is mass marketed.  Thus, when an Alan Turing autograph comes to market, wealthy mathematical and scientific bidders take notice.

The following are some autographs related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics that we have sold:

Remarkable Letter Signed by Albert Einstein, Along With His Initialed Drawings — Explaining the Science Behind His Groundbreaking Work on Electrostatic Theory and Special Relativity

Albert Einstein letter signed with his hand drawings, elegantly explaining his electrostatic theory of special relativity to a physics teacher struggling to reconcile it with experiments he was conducting. In addition to the letter, which is new to the market, Einstein generously replies to a series of questions the teacher asks him on a questionnaire, providing additional drawings and calculations, initialed ”A.E.” at the conclusion. Dated 4 September 1953 on Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study letterhead, Einstein writes to Arthur L. Converse, the teacher from Malcolm, Iowa, in part, ”There is no difficulty to explain your present experiment on the basis of the usual electrostatic theory. One has only to assume that there is a difference of potential between the body of the earth and higher layers of the atmosphere, the earth being negative relatively to those higher layers…[Einstein then draws Earth and the atmosphere, referring to it for clarification] The electric potential p rises linearly with the distance h from the surface of the earth…For all your experiments the following question is relevant: How big is the electric charge produced on a conductor which is situated in a certain height h, this body being connected with the earth…” Einstein then answers Converse’s questions on a two-page questionnaire. In one answer, Einstein seems to disagree with the question, providing both a diagram and mathematical equation and then a ”?” to try to aid understanding. He later writes ”not clear” to one answer along with a question mark and additional diagram with the notation ”charge of elektroscope increased proportional to h”. An extraordinary lot by Einstein showing the generosity of his time, with rare content on his theory of special relativity. Single page letter and two-page questionnaire each measures 8.5” x 11”. Also included is Einstein’s original mailing envelope from ”Room 115” of the Institute for Advanced Study, postmarked 7 September 1953 from Princeton. Folds and very light toning to letter, otherwise near fine. Questionnaire has folds, light toning and staple mark, otherwise near fine with bold handwriting by Einstein. With an LOA from the nephew of Arthur Converse and new to the market. Sold for $53,504.

Stephen Hawking Signed Book From 1973 — One of the Scarcest of Signatures

Stephen Hawking book signed from 1973, shortly before Hawking was not able to write his name due to ALS. Hawking signed this book, ”The Archaeology of the Industrial Revolution”, along with several other members of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge University, on the occasion of an employee leaving his job as a computer operator. Hawking signs the half-title page, ”Stephen Hawking”, in stilted, but legible writing, below the signatures of other faculty members and below the gift inscription, ”With gratitude and best wishes from the friends of the IOA computer staff.”

It was at the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge where Hawking, as a research scientist, made some of his earliest scientific breakthroughs regarding black holes and quantum mechanics. Also in 1973, he published his important first book, ”The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time” which is now considered a classic and has been printed many times over. It was also at this time that ALS was overtaking Hawkings physically, and he would be confined to a wheelchair by 1975.

First edition book, published in 1973, measures 9” x 11.25” with dust jacket. Light pulling away from binding at bottom of signature page, but overall in near fine condition. Accompanied by email chain of provenance originating from the recipient of the book. A fantastic item, captured during the brief time that Hawking’s physical condition was deteriorating but his intellectual achievements were rapidly accelerating. Sold for $25,000.

Benjamin Franklin 1785 Document Signed as President of Pennsylvania — Excellent, Bold Signature

Benjamin Franklin signs an interest certificate, dated 19 October 1785, one day after being elected President of Pennsylvania. Until May of that year he had served the new American nation as ambassador to France. Now, in a position similar to a modern day governor, Franklin authorizes Pennsylvania Treasurer David Rittenhouse to pay “to Gilbert Quirk late private of Musquetry of the Pennsylvania Line, or his order, the sum of two pounds eight shillings being one year’s interest on his depreciation certificate, due the tenth day of April 1782 agreeably to an act of The General Assembly, intitled, ‘An act to appropriate certain monies arising from the excise, for the payment of the annual interest due on unalienated certificates therein mentioned,’ passed the twenty-first day of March 1783, and out of the fund appropriated by the said act, for the purposes therein mentioned.” He signs boldly, “B. Franklin Presid.” with a paraph accentuating his name. The certificate, issued in Philadelphia, is endorsed on the verso: “Received the within contents in full / For George Bickham / Sam Fulton”. Minor toning and foxing to 7.75″ x 6.25″ document, with tape repair to verso. Overall near fine condition. Sold for $15,436.

Charles Darwin Autograph Letter Signed With Evolution Related Content — ”…you had seen a dozen instances of white cats with blue eyes being deaf…”

Charles Darwin autograph letter signed with evolution related content written shortly after ”On the Origin of Species” was published. Dated 16 August (1860 or 1861), Darwin writes to his second cousin William Darwin Fox, who introduced Charles Darwin to entomology. Upon Down, Kent stationery, Darwin writes in part, ”…you had seen a dozen instances of white cats with blue eyes being deaf: how can you by an extraordinary chance remember the sex of any of them…C. Darwin”. Fox’s reply to Darwin, giving additional details on the white, blue-eyed, blind cats, is archived in the Darwin Correspondence Project. Single page letter measures 5” x 8”, with an engraving of Darwin measuring 5.5” x 8”. Uniform toning, mounting tape remnants and writing at top not in Darwin’s hand, overall very good condition. Sold for $15,000.

We at Nate D. Sanders Auction House have many billionaire clients with scientific collecting interests and we also possess a great knack for getting an item such as your Alan Turing autograph letter signed into the press.  Just one month ago, we sold an Albert Einstein signed photo for $125,000.  Here is a Live Science article about this:

Iconic Photo of Einstein Sticking Out His Tongue Sells for $125,000

This autographed photo of Albert Einstein with his tongue out was sold at auction for $125,000.

The image of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out is probably one of most ubiquitous (and memorable) photos of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist. For decades, it has papered the walls of middle-school science classrooms and college dorm rooms. But now, someone has purchased the real thing for $125,000.The autographed print was sold Thursday (July 27) by the Los Angeles-based Nate D. Sanders auction house to an unnamed buyer. The picture had been taken after Einstein’s 72nd birthday party at Princeton University on March 14, 1951.

As the story goes, Einstein stuck his tongue out at a group of photographers who were trying to get the scientist to pose for them as he left the party. Photographer Arthur Sasse of the wire service UPI got the lucky shot.

Einstein himself was a fan of the photo and even asked UPI for nine prints to use as personal greeting cards, according to the auction house. Most of the prints were cropped to include only Einstein’s face, but the 7x 10-inch print that was sold this week offers a slightly more extended view, showing Einstein between Frank Aydelotte, an English professor and head of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton University, and Aydelotte’s wife, Marie Jeanette. The print is even signed by Einstein along the left margin, “A. Einstein .51.” Prints, letters and other memorabilia associated with Einstein often draw high bids at auctions. Earlier this year, someone spent nearly $54,000 on Einstein’s 1953 written response to a physics teacher who seemed to have questions about the theory of special relativity. An Einstein-inscribed Bible was sold for $68,500 in 2013. And a 1939 letter Einstein wrote to a New York hat merchant who helped Jews escape the Nazi regime sold for $12,500 in 2014.

End Live Science story.

We have had great luck with our scientific billionaire clients, that we have even sold 6 scientific Nobel Prizes, a world record for an auction house.  One Nobel Prize award sold for almost $800,000.  Here is the write-up from CNBC (also an example of the great press we receive):
