Extremely Scarce Joseph Warren Autograph Letter Signed — Dated 5 May 1775 — From the Revolutionary War Martyr Who Declared of America “I will set her free or die” — Only One of Seven Joseph Warren ALsS Known to Exist

Joseph Warren autograph letter signed “JWarren” dated 5 May 1775, shortly after Lexington & Concord, where Warren fought and before Bunker Hill, where he was killed. In this letter, Warren references the Committee of Correspondence; it was as leader of this Committee that Warren sent Paul Revere on his historic Midnight Run only a few weeks earlier. Letter reads in full, “Watertown May 5 1775 / Gentlemen – the Bearer hereof is sent on express from Albany with the Letter for the Committee of Correspondence you [sic] will be kind enough to give him all the assistance in your power in obtaining intelligence relating to our public affairs. I am most respectfully yours. JWarren”. Trained as a physician, Warren was one of the most vociferous critics of England and enthusiastic supporters of America’s cause. Before his death, he was appointed a Major General and President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, the highest position in the revolutionary government. Barely escaping death at Lexington & Concord, he volunteered to fight at Bunker Hill where he perished, but not before reportedly declaring, “These fellows say we won’t fight! By Heaven, I hope I shall die up to my knees in blood!” Because of his early death, letters in his hand are extremely scarce — this being only one of seven known to exist. Letter measures 6.25″ x 6″. Lightly soiled with some ink smudging. Rough bottom edge. In light blue cloth folding-case with blue morocco spine and cream silk interior. Very good condition. A dark and rare Joseph Warren autograph.  Sold for $18,302.60.
