Charles Addams Art

We at Nate D. Sanders have been very lucky to have some exciting artwork come our way over the past few months. One of the most notable artists’ work we have lately been associated with is “Addams Family” creator Charles Addams. Charles Addams art was truly visionary, and his creepily humorous series “Addams Family” is firmly entrenched in the American zeitgeist. The reach of the series has been felt far and wide, from books and drawings all the way to films and even video games. This past September we had the privilege of handling the sale of items from the estate of famed science fiction author Ray Bradbury, a novelist whom Mr. Addams was very fond of. Mr. Bradbury had an extensive collection of comic art and Charles Addams art, including an original painting from 1946 and used for the cover of Bradbury’s 2001 book “From The Dust Returned”, a collaboration that represented a reunion of sorts for the two prolific artists. The two met in 1946, and Addams gave him this painting, as the two became fast friends and planned on collaborating on a story about an Illinois family of Vampires. That collaboration never materialized, and the two went their separate ways, each moving on to two very successful careers, their unique originality spearheading their rises to prominence. It would make sense that Ray Bradbury would use Addams’ work for the cover of one of his novels, and it is somewhat touching that Bradbury finally used the drawing for a cover of his book in 2001, albeit after Mr. Addams passed away. Here is the beautifully macabre drawing, which sold for $25,000 at Charles Addams art auction.

Addams was widely known for his top-notch New Yorker cartoons. They always stood out from all the rest, and his style is still copied today. This Charles Addams art gem was offered by us in the past. It is an original drawing of one of Addams’ cartoons for the New Yorker from 1952. There are very few of these on the market, and this one is in excellent shape.

Charles Addams Original “New Yorker” Cartoon Illustration Art — Published in 1952 & Humorously Depicting a Golfer Visiting a Fortune Teller — Also Signed by Addams

Charles Addams cartoon illustration artwork, originally published in the “New Yorker” magazine on 16 August 1952 on page 33, as well as in “Homebodies” and “My Crowd”, which are compilations of Addams’ work. Addams contributed his cartoons to the “New Yorker” regularly from 1932 onward. His macabre wit was wildly popular and eventually led to the creation of his most well-known characters, “The Addams Family”. Here, Addams depicts a golfer leaving a fortune teller’s house, as she prophesies over her crystal ball, “You’re going to shoot 127”, a terrible score for the golf enthusiast. The caption is handwritten by Addams and was subsequently changed in its printed form to read “You’re going to shoot a hundred and fourteen, dear.” Signed “Charles Addams” in black along bottom right of drawing. Cartoon’s caption is written to mat below illustration, presumably in Addams’ hand. Mixed media illustration with ink and watercolor on thick paper affixed to cardboard measures 13.5″ x 13.5″ with two .5″ tears and two .25″ chips to right and left edges, though have been repaired. Else near fine. Sold for $4,000.
