JAMES CAGNEY OSCAR UP FOR AUCTION THIS NOVEMBER

One of the greatest Oscars to ever go on sale, won by one of America’s most beloved actors, is in our November 20th, 2014 auction. It is James Cagney’s lone Academy award, won for his sensational performance as George M. Cohan in the 1942 classic film “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. Cagney is quite simply breathtaking in the movie, and very few actors have been able to break type as successfully and astonishingly as Cagney does in this delightful film. Cagney played the song and dance man George M. Cohan in the film, and he was really quite magical.  Watch him sing and dance below:

Now let’s contrast that performance with this clip of the types of characters Cagney usually played:

His performance in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” is the epitome of what can be considered a transformational acting performance. Never before had an actor changed the entire perception of who they were as a performer. Essentially, nobody knew Cagney had that in him. No one even came close to his performance that year, and to this day it remains as one of the best individual performances of all time. Cagney made that movie.

We are proudly auctioning off the original Oscar won by Cagney himself, and if you take a look at it, especially the base, you might be a little bit confused, since it looks a lot different than the one Cagney held at the ceremony:

POST-WWII OSCAR

During WWII when James Cagney won, Oscar recipients were given a rather cheap plaster Oscar at the ceremony as a stand-in until after the war when metal was no longer rationed. These Oscars were notoriously flimsy and the actor Barry Fitzgerald famously broke the head of his while accidentally hitting it with his golf club. The base of these Oscars was also lower, which you can see in the photos.

In 1945, after the war, Cagney turned in this Oscar to get the beautiful Oscar we are auctioning today, which Cagney took immaculate care of until his death in 1986. It is quite simply the most stunning and lustrous Oscar that we have ever auctioned, with the shine nearly as brilliant as when Cagney received it almost 70 years ago. The Cagney family consigned this Oscar with Doyle’s auctions in September of 2000, along with other compelling pieces of Cagney memorabilia. Cagney’s singing and dancing captivated audiences at the time, and his achievement in the film was widely regarded as Cagney’s proudest moments. It gives me goosebumps to say that it can be one of yours as well.
