After more than 9,000 television performances as the ever-memorable, iconic children’s show host, Captain Kangaroo, it’s true blue that the man in the red jacket be lauded for his lifelong pursuits.

Bob Keeshan was a pioneer of children’s television at every stage in his career. His awards include five Emmy Awards in 1978, 1981-1984, three Peabody Awards in 1958, 1972, 1979 and many, many more — including the Clown Hall of Fame!

Asked once if he ever dreamed of parlaying his fame into the world of adults, he poignantly responded,

”Just as actors are afraid of child audiences, because they’re so honest, I would be scared stiff of going before the big folks.”

Here’s a rundown of some noteworthy awards bestowed upon the Captain:

Plaque Honoring The Placement of Captain Kangaroo’s Star on The Walk of Fame in 1976

This 1976 plaque commemorates the placement of his star on the Walk of Fame. Elegant and dazzling, plaque features a metal star mounted to a rich blue velvet background.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce bestowed this incredible honor upon Keeshan on 16 June 1976, at the height of his career. Keeshan’s star is located at 1500 Vine Street, on the famed corner of Hollywood & Vine.

Emmy Statue Awarded to Bob Keeshan in 1982 for Outstanding Children’s Entertainment Series for “Captain Kangaroo”

Brilliant Daytime Emmy Award statue issued to Bob Keeshan as Executive Producer of “Captain Kangaroo”. Keeshan won the category of “Outstanding Children’s Entertainment Series” at the ceremony recognizing the 1981-1982 television season.

He had produced and starred as the grandfatherly title character since the show was green-lit by CBS in 1955. In addition to this category, Keeshan won Outstanding Performer in Children’s Programming this same year, and again in 1983 and the show’s last year, 1984.

Silver Pitcher Gifted to Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan — From Mr. Greenjeans, Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum in 1962

A more personal award. This silver pitcher gifted to Keeshan by his co-star Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum, who played sidekick Mr. Greenjeans. Pitcher is engraved to the side, “To / CAPTAIN / May 22 1962 / Thanks For Two Thousand / With Affection / Lumpy”.

Scarce Captain Kangaroo Sylvania Award — Television industry award was presented to Bob Keeshan in 1956, “For Outstanding Contribution To Creative Television Technique”

Beautiful trophy is in the form of a timepiece. The prestigious yet short-lived Sylvania Television awards were sponsored by television set manufacturer Sylvania Electric Products from 1951-1959. When the company merged with GT&E, the annual awards ceremony was cancelled and quickly supplanted by the Emmy Awards.
