William Howard Taft typed letter signed with exceptional content, dated 23 March 1919. Addressed to close friend and Washington journalist Gus Krager, Taft praises Theodore Roosevelt's analysis of the League of Nations and also discusses Woodrow Wilson and those who criticize the League. Taft then writes of women's support of the League of Nations: ''...It is most amusing to note the incitement on the part of political women to support the League not only by virtue of their natural pacifistic tendencies, but also because of their bitterness against Lodge and Knox, and more than all, against Borah and Reed, all of whom, as I recollect it, certainly the first three, voted against suffrage, and I am quite sure Reed did, too. This attitude of the women of course will not affect Wadsworth, but it will affect Calder whose appreciation of the women was shown in his vote for the amendment and who usually has his ear fairly close to the ground.'' Taft also writes, ''...I am gathering an impression - perhaps erroneous - that the objections to the League are not with the plain people but with the Republicans who hate Wilson, with business men who are looking for peace, and possibly with Sinn Feiners...'' Letter runs 2pp. on two separate sheets, signed ''Wm H Taft''. Pages measure 8'' x 10''. Stain from paper clips at top left of each page and toning, overall very good condition.
