General William T. Sherman letter signed, sent to Captain William Nelson on 12 December 1887. Sherman discusses the difficult prospects of one of Nelson's relatives gaining admission to West Point. Written from the Army Building in New York, letter reads ''My dear sir / Yours of the 7th Inst. is received, and I assure you that it affords me pleasure to acquaint you with my views on the matter you mention. The President is privileged in making ten appointments to the Military Academy at West Point during his term of office - four years - or two or three each year, as vacancies may occur. Each Congressional District is allowed to one appointment through the nomination of the member representing it every four years, subject, of course, to examination and the applicant being not less than 17 nor more than 21 years of age. The latter course is the best to be pursued, for generally the President has about 800 applications for his two or three vacancies. I have endorsed over a dozen but will endorse more without even the distant hope of one succeeding. The Adjutant General at Washington has a printed circular for the information of applicants and I would advise that you write him for a copy of the same. Thanking and reciprocating the kindly sentiments contained in the latter part of your letter...[signed] W.T. Sherman''. 2pp. letter on two ruled sheets measures 8'' x 10.5''. Includes two additional letters addressed to Nelson. Toning and separation starting along right edge folds. Very good plus condition.
