William Shatner's handwritten signed recollection of getting the first ''Star Trek'' movie made in 1979. Unbelievably, director Robert Wise was rumored to have never heard of ''Star Trek'', despite his career in Hollywood directing ''The Sound of Music'', ''West Side Story'', ''The Day the Earth Stood Still'', ''The Andromeda Strain'' and several other hits. Composed on his personal stationery, Shatner writes, ''It was going to be a movie for T.V. Nope - it was going to be a new series - excuse me? Change that, it is now a movie - a movie movie - I'm o.k. with that. Robert Wise is going to direct the first movie - that's huge - he is one of the best - we heard later he had never heard of Star Trek. God, he's going to direct it and he's never heard of us. But listen, his wife is a big fan - urged him to do it - Yes Wise is going to do it. There was dancing in the streets, Robert Wise elevates Star Trek from a mere television show to a mainstream movie - Now the script - well it needs some work - But we have to get going to make the release date which was set for the Holiday season - We grind out the movie - Leonard and I working in tandem try and improve the script - We have meetings with Robert then Gene and we try but Gene won't accept our ideas. I've forgotten what the issue was - but Robert was enthusiastic about the change after we sort of performed it for him - but at a second performance that day for Gene it didn't go as well - no changes - too bad. / William Shatner''.
