White House used oyster plate in the distinctive Rutherford B. Hayes design, a supplemental piece reordered by both the administrations of Chester Arthur and Grover Cleveland. Oyster plate features five wells in the likeness of open blue point oysters, surrounded by painted shell, seaweed and water designs highlighted in gilt. Pattern by Theodore Davis stands out as a strikingly unique, high-concept scheme for china, in which scenes of native North American wildlife are painted naturalistically, even including three-dimensional elements. Executed by Haviland and Company, the Limoges porcelain firm that provided the first order. Plate edge is scalloped. Verso features Theodore Davis' printed signature, Haviland & Company's initials, the patent date as 10 August 1880 and Haviland's manufacturer's mark. Distinct from copies sold to the public by absence of patent number. Measures 8.5'' in diameter. Rubbing to gilt rim on the underside, else fine.
