Interesting Walmart pamphlet from the late 1970s, instructing managers how to prevent labor unions from forming in their stores and educating them on what they can and can't do to prevent them. Walmart is one of the most successful retailers in avoiding unionization, and this booklet might be the first comprehensive pamphlet directed toward squashing them. Entitled ''You and Your Company's Labor Relations'', 26pp. booklet has the following chapters: ''Wal-Mart's Policy regarding labor organizations'', ''Unionization: Who benefits?'', ''How to avoid unionization'' and ''Answers to employees' questions concerning unions''. Wal-Mart's position is clearly laid out on page 4: ''The Company is opposed to unionization of its associates. Any suggestion that the Company is neutral on the subject or that it encourages associates to join labor organizations is not true.'' To avoid unions from forming, Walmart's position is to ''Pay wages which are as good as or better than the prevailing rate for similar jobs in the community'', ''Provide a benefit program which is second to none in the retail industry'' and ''Offer a sense of job security'', among other intangible benefits such as acknowledging good work and providing a sense of community. The pamphlet discusses how to speak to employees who are considering joining a union, and what the supervisor is allowed to say or do; the previous owner, the Walmart manager, summarizes a section by writing ''TIPS'' to himself on page 13: '''Never' T-threat, I-interrigate [sic], P-promise, S-spy''. Pamphlet measures 4.25'' x 8.75''. A few pages are underlined or circled, otherwise near fine condition.
