W.H. Auden autograph letter signed, dated 24 May 1972, on stationery printed with his home address in Kirchstetten, Austria. The poet was buried there when he died in September of the following year. Letter to Father Irvine reads, ''Thank you for your letter. I'm afraid I can't manage to...since I shall not get to England until October. Thank you for asking me. Yours sincerely / W.H. Auden''. Lot includes copy of Auden's book, ''Collected Shorter Poems 1927-1957.'' Book with unclipped dustjacket is in very good condition. Minor soiling and creasing to one page letter and accompanying envelope, else very good.
