Voltaire autograph letter signed regarding excessive taxation in 18th century France. The Enlightenment leader here writes to Louis Gaspard Fabri, Mayor in the province of Gex, where Voltaire had purchased a country estate in 1759, shortly after completing his masterpiece ''Candide''. Having acquired the title of Lord, Voltaire used his power in the region to fight excessive taxation by a local priest, to which this letter in French pertains. Letter reads in full, ''the Richard la bat Sir has your latest report and on it he will make his reflections, in any case it is always apropos that a General Tax Collector come to deal with you. The latest adventure which will cost some thing to the State Officials will not contribute a small part in making our Masters of Taxes listen to reason. I am at your orders for all of my life without ceremony V...'' Bifolium card-style stationery measures 7.875'' x 6'' unfolded, with docketing on opposing page.
