Theodore Roosevelt autograph letter signed, dated Thursday 21 March, likely either from 1889 or 1895, when Roosevelt lived at 689 Madison Avenue, the stationery upon which this letter is written. Roosevelt writes to the Honorable Campbell Brown in full, ''My dear Sir, I send you herewith a letter of introduction from Dr. Polk. / I am very anxious to see if there are not some old mss. [manuscripts], in the shape of diaries or private letters extant, relating to the early times in Tennessee; as I am engaged on a work on the subject. I shall be in Nashville by Sunday, and a note addressed to the care of Judge John M. Lea, would reach me. / Dr. Polk spoke as if possibly you yourself might be in Nashville next week. / Trusting you will excuse my thus taking up your time I am / Most sincerely yours / Theodore Roosevelt''. Two page letter on card-style bifolium stationery measures 4.5'' x 7'' as folded. Uniform toning, hole to upper left corner, some dampstaining to first page, and some show through from a note by Campbell Brown on opposing page. Overall in very good condition. Based on provenance included with the letter, Roosevelt appears to be researching and writing about the Confederate General Richard S. Ewell of Tennessee.
