Stan Laurel typed letter signed, dated 29 June 1963, with great content regarding the Laurel & Hardy comedic duo. Laurel writes to his friend Bill Brown, in part, ''...Yes, I just turned 73 - think I turned the wrong way!...Hardy & I were certainly not the creators of pie throwing, we were however I think the first to use four thousand REAL PIES in a two reel film ('Battle of the Century'). The Upper berth on the train skit you mention in 'Laughter U.S.A.' was taken from an early sound picture title 'Berth Marks' (a two reeler)...'' Laurel then laments about the passing of Zazu Pitts (''a very sweet person'') before answering questions about Laurel & Hardy: ''No Hardy & I were never on Radio, as you know we were visual comics, so of course no value to Radio...Many others that worked with us [achieved fame], such as...the late Jean Harlow, Lupi Valez, Paulette Goddard etc...I think the hight light [sic] of my career was appearing on the Royal Command Performance at the London Palladium, Eng. in I947...I considered Hardy, a Comedy Straight Man, in essence in asked the questions & I supplied the comic answers, but both were eccentric characters. (You figure it out!) actually, the characters we came in contact with, served as straight men or women to both of us (or sumpin!)...[signed] Stan''. Single page letter on Oceana stationery measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Folds and light toning, else near fine. With original envelope.
