Letter from the New York State Athletic Commission denying Sonny Liston a boxing license, dated 27 April 1962. 3 page document reads in part: ''On April 17, 1962 Charles Liston, ring name Sonny Liston, made application for a license as a boxer to this Commission...Liston's offense record has been widely publicized and we refer to it only to indicate that his first offense which included robbery and larceny from the person, occurred when he was 17 years of age...There would be more than a calculated risk in the issuance of a license on this application. The commission unanimously disapproves the application and denies the license to Charles Sonny Liston.'' Liston would go on to fight Floyd Patterson 7 months later at Comiskey Park in Chicago, knocking him out in the first round and overtaking the World Heavyweight title.
