Cabinet card portrait of Native American Sioux Chief Matowaungata, also known as High Bear, circa 1880. Photo is mounted on photographer's card, identified as L[ucien].W. Stilwell of Deadwood, South Dakota, with ''High Bear, Chief'' printed in the negative at the lower portion of the photo. Chief High Bear is shown wearing an eagle feather headdress, a hairpipe bone breastplate, fur wrapped braids and metal armbands, and holding a beaded quirt. Card measures 4.25'' x 6.5''. Mild discoloration at top, and bump to lower right corner. Corner abrasions on verso. Overall very good plus condition.
