Rutherford B. Hayes pardon signed as President, authorizing the pardon of Earls S. Rathbun. Partly-printed document is dated 1 April 1878, interestingly the same day that Billy the Kid shot and killed Sheriff Brady in Lincoln County, New Mexico, which would force President Hayes to step in to prevent lawlessness there. Pardon measures 7.75'' x 9.875'' on bifolium paper. Block of toning at upper left, else near fine condition.
