Important manuscript by Richard Nixon with detailed, handwritten notes from August 1966. As Nixon was gearing up to run for President in the 1968 election, he here outlines various foreign policy themes, with Vietnam at the forefront. Upon a sheet of legal paper, Nixon first discusses his relationship with Hawaii, as he presumably was addressing a crowd there: ''15 years ago 1st visit / fell in love with the land''. He then goes on to discuss the polarizing split between the Republicans and Democrats noting that, ''The Nation needs great leadership'' and ''Vietnam: (1) 1st war -- unite our parties / unite allies. (2) We have enemy on ropes / Need 1. U.S. United (war will be lost in U.S.) 2. Let's fight our war. (3) Let's unite allies. Our goal is victory over aggression. It will boost freedom. 1. We shall win. 2. No negotiation...'' He goes on to discuss the need to unite the U.S. further and ''avoid long ground war'' and ''shorten war'' and ''use our power''. He also writes about 1968 politics, stating, ''I bring you good news: 1. Best Rep. year in 20...We shall win...United Reps / Dems Divided - foreign & Bobby & Hubert''. He asks ''Why has he [Johnson] slipped?'' and answers ''T.V. - most frightening news - his pledge to campaign in 50 states''. Nixon then ends his notes with ''Now is the time to keep him on ropes'', likely referring to President Johnson. Measures 8.5'' x 13.25'' on one sheet with very minor toning. Very good condition.
