Handwritten notes by Vice President Richard Nixon, ostensibly for a speech or perhaps simply for his own reference, given by Nixon to his biographer Earl Mazo, who wrote, ''Richard Nixon: A Political and Personal Portrait''. Published in 1959, the book's source material was written near or before 1958, during which time Nixon served as Vice President. Nixon here attempts to clarify for himself his position on issues as he poses the question: ''What position should Rep party take?'' Beneath, he lists the issues, ''Intn'l, Civil Rights, Economic Program - / broad gauged'' and concludes, ''What about change you change - / 1) I hope I do - as situation change - / shouldn't be doctrinaire - / Record answers it...'' Other issues come to mind and Nixon is left with no certain answer, ''2) But Civil Rights, Foreign Economic [illegible] / Economic correction''. Ultimately he writes, ''Don't know where RN. stands''. Verso of page has additional notes by Nixon in black ink. Runs 2pp. and measures 5.5'' x 5.75''. Perforation runs through center. Small stains to verso, near fine overall.
