Excellent manuscript, likely for a speech, by Richard Nixon with detailed, handwritten notes from August 1966. As Nixon was gearing up to run for President in the 1968 election, he here outlines themes for his future campaign. Upon a sheet of legal paper, Nixon first discusses the state of Hawaii, as he presumably was addressing a crowd there: ''Hawaii: 25,000 -- garden island / tourist island / Randy's island (?)'' He then turns to business, giving his opinion on Congress and providing distinction between the Republicans and Democrats: ''House of Reps / tax burden / Fed. Govt. in school system / they are a party of govt. / we are party of people / great turning point / 1. most radical -- leads to federal (?) / 2. In terms of people: means govt. pays rents -- Dr. Hill -- greater income whether win or not / a great society? 1. Not what [makes] admin. great (2) what people did -- the difference -- they are party of govt / we are party of people / because we are party of people...govt. should not help those who won't help selves...'' He then mentions a local politician and ends the speech with, ''...way to greatness is not good doing more for people but people doing more for selves''. Document measures 8.5'' x 13.25'' on one single sheet with two staple holes at top left. Near fine.
