Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes signs a letter marked ''Dictated'' from Boston on 8 March 1889. A message on the stationery explains the 80 year-old Holmes' need to dictate his correspondences, citing impaired eyesight and sheer volume. The original envelope is included, indicating Francis Hathaway, Esq. of New Bedford, Mass. was the recipient. In part: ''My dear Sir, I will copy that epitaph for you the first time I go to Cambridge. If you do not receive it you will do well to remind me again of my promise...[signed] OW Holmes''. 1pp. on card-style stationery measures 4.75'' x 5.75''. Creasing and a small spot to verso, else near fine.
