Civil War letter from KIA Confederate soldier James W. Anthony of the 11th Alabama Infantry, Co. J, to his fiancee, accompanied by three of his poignant love letters to her from just before the war and one additional undated letter, possibly from the War, for a total of 5. Letters are written to Eveline E. Storey, ranging in date from January 1860-April 1863. The couple became acquainted in their hometown in Georgia, and when Anthony's parents moved to Alabama before the war broke out he left with them and then enlisted. Here he explains to Eveline that he intends to return to Georgia for her, but sadly he was killed at the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. From Richmond, VA on 17 April 1863 Anthony writes his beloved, ''Miss E.E. Storey...I am still in service and have been for two years. I have not been home sence I left home. I think that I will go home when my time is out my mother has died sence I have been out in the war it almost breaks my hart to think of it. I think of the sweet words of advice she give to me when I left to come to the war and I can see how the tears was twinkling down her cheeks I wish that my head was a fountain of water so as I could shed tears after her all the time but I must give her up. I can not fetch her back but I will prepare to meet her in a better world than this is. Miss Eveline I am coming to see you just as soon as this war ends or if I can get a furlow I endtend to come I no that you think hard of me for the way that I have done. You have good reason for getting mad with me but I have writing to you several times since I have been in the war but I don't know whether you got them or not if you have got them or gets this I would like that you would write to me. I do believe that it is good that I did not come to see you for I no that if I had went to see you before I come to the war I should of married you and then I would of hated to a left you and went to war and that would nearly kill me to had you to left. If I ever so happy to get you I want the pleasure of living with you until God calls on us from this world. I was about ready to come after you when this war broke out. I intended to come back to Georgia after you the same spring that the war broke out. I thought it would not do to marry and war at our doors. I thought then that I had better go to the war before I married for I did not think that the war would last so long. I volunteered in April the 11 1861 and went to the state of VA for to fight for the rights of our lovely south...I will come and see you if I can get a furlow or if I live to see the end of this war...J.W. Anthony''. Tragically, the next letter Eveline Storey received was from Anthony's fellow 11th AL soldier George W. Walden informing her of Anthony's death; he was shot in the head during the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. Civil War letter runs 4pp. on a single sheet of card-style stationery. Earlier letters run 1 to 3 pages. Separation along fold intersections and a letter fragment, else near fine overall.
