Oscar statuette awarded to Paul Groesse for "Color Art Direction" for the 1949 Technicolor film, "Little Women." This "Little Women" Oscar is one of the last to be publicly available, as award recipients were forbidden to sell their Oscars after 1950. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented this statue to Groesse on 23 March 1950 at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Groesse, three-time Oscar winner, shared the award with Cedric Gibbons, who received his own Oscar. Based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, the 1949 version of "Little Women" starred June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Lawford. Opening in March 1949, it was the featured Easter movie at Radio City Music Hall and one of the top grossing films of 1949. Two engraved plaques are placed on opposite sides of the metallic pedestal. One reads, "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences / 1949". The other reads, "Academy First Award To Paul Groesse / For Color Art Direction of / 'Little Women'". The figure and film reel, composed of gold-plated britannium measuring 10" tall, top the pedestal, bringing the total height to 13". The pedestal's diameter measures 5" and the award weighs 6 pounds, 6 ounces. Moderate tarnishing to statuette. Overall in very good condition.
